What it costs, by size
Capacity is the single biggest thing you pay for, so a price with no size attached is not an answer. These are the prices actually charged on Amazon today for the systems this site tracks — not list prices, not estimates, and not averaged with anything that is out of stock.

The number that is missing from most answers
Search for what a mini split costs and most answers quote a single installed figure, somewhere around $3,000–$5,000. That figure is not wrong, but it silently bundles two very different things: the equipment, and a licensed technician to evacuate and charge the line set.

Per ton, if that is the unit you think in
The trade quotes capacity in tons, and one ton is 12,000 BTU per hour. The conversion is exact, so the same measurement reads either way:

Both figures are equipment only, for DIY systems, and both are medians and minima of what can actually be bought today rather than of a price list. A quote from an installer priced per ton includes labour and is not comparable with these without adding it back.
Why two systems of the same size differ so much
Larger systems are somewhat cheaper per BTU, but the effect is weak in this catalogue (r = -0.20), not the rule of thumb the trade repeats. The clear exception is the smallest size: 9,000 BTU systems start at $64.44 per 1,000 BTU, because the compressor, inverter board and shipping crate cost much the same whatever the output. What actually moves the number is which system you pick within a size: at 24,000 BTU the range runs from $28.75 to $154.17 per 1,000 BTU, a factor of 5.4, and that gap is larger than anything between the sizes. Within a single capacity the spread is wider than most people expect, and it is not explained by efficiency alone. What you are usually paying for at the top of a size band is a longer warranty, a named brand with a service network, a higher SEER2 rating, and line sets that are included rather than extra.
Whether the higher SEER2 rating pays for itself is a separate question, and a numerical one: what each system costs to run works it through with your own hours and tariff.
None of that is visible in a price per BTU, which is exactly why this site shows the efficiency rating and the zone count beside every number rather than ranking on price alone. The cheapest system of a size is a fact; that it is the right buy is a judgement, and the site does not make it for you.

Once a day every catalogued system is fetched from the Amazon Creators API.
