These are Amazon listings, most of them third-party sellers; buying direct from the manufacturer can be cheaper, and we do not track that. Anything at or below the median is a fair price for a DIY system today; the floor is what a careful buyer actually pays.

Why a single “good price” needs a class attached
Dollars per BTU is only a fair comparison between systems that cost the same to put on the wall. Two things break that, and both are handled by splitting the ranking rather than by averaging over the difference.
Install class
A pre-charged DIY system arrives with a sealed quick-connect line set and needs no licensed technician. A conventional system needs the line set evacuated and charged by someone with the equipment and the certification, which published guides put at roughly $1,000–$3,500 depending on the job. On a $900 unit that is not a rounding error, it is a doubling. This site therefore catalogues DIY systems only, so that the equipment price is the whole price and $/BTU means what it appears to mean.
Zone count
An 18,000 BTU three-zone system and an 18,000 BTU single-zone system show the same nameplate capacity and are not the same product. The three-zone carries three indoor heads, three line sets and a branch box, and cannot deliver its full rating to any one room. Ranking them together on $/BTU would make the multi-zone look expensive for reasons that have nothing to do with value, so each gets its own ranking and its own cheapest crown.
The four things $/BTU does not capture
- Efficiency
- SEER2 sets what the system costs to run. Two units at an identical $/BTU can differ by a third on the power bill over a season, and the cheaper one per BTU is frequently the more expensive one to own. We show the rating the listing states and leave the trade-off visible rather than folding it into a score.
- SEER against SEER2
- These are different test standards, not different words for the same thing. SEER2 is measured at higher external static pressure and reads roughly 4–5% lower for identical hardware, so an older listing quoting plain SEER looks better than it is. We never convert one into the other, and a listing that states neither shows not stated.
- Line set length
- The sealed charge in a DIY system supports a fixed run, commonly 16 or 25 feet. If the outdoor unit has to sit further away, the install stops being DIY and the price advantage goes with it.
- Electrical supply
- A 115V system usually plugs into an existing circuit. A 208-230V system usually does not, and the electrician is not in the $/BTU.
Where the cheapest per BTU is usually found
Larger systems are somewhat cheaper per BTU, but the effect is weak in this catalogue (r = -0.20), not the rule of thumb the trade repeats. The clear exception is the smallest size: 9,000 BTU systems start at $64.44 per 1,000 BTU, because the compressor, inverter board and shipping crate cost much the same whatever the output. What actually moves the number is which system you pick within a size: at 24,000 BTU the range runs from $28.75 to $154.17 per 1,000 BTU, a factor of 5.4, and that gap is larger than anything between the sizes.
Oversizing is still the mistake to avoid, but for a reason that has nothing to do with price: a system with more capacity than the room needs cools the air before it has removed the humidity, then short-cycles — the room ends up cold and damp and the compressor wears out sooner. Settle the size first with the sizing calculator, then compare within it.
