The efficient one uses 167 fewer kWh a year, which is $31 at the tariff below. Its extra $100 of purchase price takes 3 years to earn back.

SEER2 is a seasonal average at rated load; inverter systems modulate, so a real bill will differ. The figures are comparable with each other under the same assumptions, which is what they are for.

When a higher rating pays back, and when it never does

The answer is a ratio, not a rule: the extra purchase price divided by the yearly saving. Both halves move independently. The saving depends only on capacity, the two SEER2 ratings, your hours and your tariff; the extra price depends on which two systems you are choosing between. When the efficient unit is only a little dearer — as with the pair at the top of this page — the payback is a few years. When it is a thousand dollars dearer, the same saving takes decades, longer than the unit will last.

Two things push the payback shorter: a long cooling season and an expensive tariff. Both are inputs above, and both are yours to set — the site does not know where you live. The comparison tool takes any two systems in the catalogue and shows the ratio for that pair, so the question “is the better rating worth it” gets a number instead of an opinion.

Efficiency matters for other reasons too: a higher-SEER2 unit is usually a better inverter that holds temperature more evenly, and it may qualify for a rebate this page cannot see. But the claim that it pays for itself is arithmetic, and the arithmetic is here.
