A multi-zone BTU is not a single-zone BTU

This is the one thing the metric genuinely hides at this end of the catalogue, so it gets stated plainly rather than footnoted.

An 18,000 BTU three-zone system and an 18,000 BTU single-zone system carry the same nameplate number and are different purchases. The multi-zone includes three indoor heads, three line sets and a branch box, and it cannot deliver 18,000 BTU to any one room — the capacity is shared, and each head is typically rated around 6,000. If you need one room cooled hard, an 18k single-zone does it and an 18k three-zone does not, at any price per BTU.

That is why the two never share a ranking or a BEST mark on this site. Comparing them on $/BTU alone would make the multi-zone look like poor value for carrying hardware the single-zone simply does not have. The same argument applies between zone counts, so two-zone and three-zone systems are crowned separately here rather than competing with each other.

Whether one multi-zone beats separate units is a number, per system: each one against its heads bought separately.

When multi-zone is the right answer anyway

If instead you have one large open space, a single-zone system of the right size is usually both cheaper and better at the job. Size it with the calculator first.

What to check before ordering a multi-zone DIY system

Line set count and lengths, whether each head is individually sized for its room rather than all identical, the minimum and maximum total connected capacity the outdoor unit supports, and the electrical supply — multi-zone outdoor units are essentially always 208-230V on a dedicated circuit.
