Installation against equipment, by size

The question is usually put as “is DIY cheaper”, which is not quite it. A pre-charged DIY system and a conventional one cost roughly the same to buy. What DIY removes is the visit from a licensed technician to evacuate and charge the line set — and that visit is priced against the job, not against the unit. So the right comparison is the installation bill against the cheapest DIY system of the size you need.

What the ratio means

The installer would cost more than the whole unit. That holds at 4 of the 5 sizes in the table below. The exception is 36,000 BTU, where the cheapest DIY unit is itself $2,500 and only the high end of the installation range exceeds it. Where even the low end clears 1×, the pre-charged category makes its case in one number; where only the high end does, the answer depends on which end your house is.
Why it is a range
A ground-floor wall with the condenser directly outside is the low end. A long line-set run, a brick wall, an upstairs room or an electrician for a new 230 V circuit each push toward the high end. The site cannot see your house; the table shows both ends so you can place yourself.
What it does not include
Your own time, a vacuum-pump rental if the kit does not come pre-charged after all, the electrical circuit a 230 V unit may need, and the value of a labour warranty you would not get. None of those is a listing price, so none is in the table.

Over the life of the unit

Purchase is one number and running cost is another; installation is a third that lands once. At the defaults on the cost-to-run page, five years of electricity for a typical system in this catalogue comes to $718, so a professional installation at the low end of the range would have cost roughly 1.4 times as much as five years of running the unit. That is the scale of the thing DIY removes.
